Who Can File ITR-2

Who Should File ITR-2?

For AY 2026-27, ITR-2 applies to Individuals and HUFs without business/professional income who are not eligible for ITR-1. It is commonly relevant for:

Salaried Individuals with Capital Gains High-Income Individuals NRIs & RNOR Taxpayers Stock & Mutual Fund Investors Property Owners (More Than 2) Company Directors Unlisted Equity Shareholders HUFs Without Business Income

Eligibility should be checked for the relevant Assessment Year — the correct form depends on the taxpayer's complete income profile.

Clear Expectations

Who Cannot File ITR-2?

ITR-2 is not available to every individual or HUF. For AY 2026-27, important exclusions include a taxpayer who:

Has income chargeable under Profits and Gains of Business or Profession
Receives remuneration, interest, salary, bonus or commission from a firm taxable as business income
Is a freelancer or proprietor with business/professional income
Should instead consider ITR-3, or ITR-4 where eligible

A taxpayer should not select ITR-2 merely because of high income or capital gains — the complete income profile must be reviewed.
