What Are DSC and DIN?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is used to digitally sign electronic documents and forms. A Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique identification number associated with an individual who is appointed or eligible to act as a director under the Companies Act framework.

DSC = Electronic signing mechanism

Instead of print–sign–scan, the applicable DSC is used for electronic signing of MCA and other online filings where digital signature is required.

DIN = Unique director identifier

It is not a physical document like a PAN card. It is a unique number assigned to the individual and used in applicable MCA and company records.

Two different problems, two different tools

DIN tells MCA “who the director is.” DSC allows the authorised person to “electronically sign.” Neither by itself makes someone a director.
